The Lord’s Prayer

8 Principles of Prayer

 "In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.

And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen."

Mat 6:9-13(NKJV)

In the book of Luke chapter 11 verse 1 the disciples said to Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray.” The prayer in Luke and the prayer in Matthew 6 are the same with slight differences. We are going to at the prayer in Matthew for this study.

Prayer is simply talking to God. When we pray we give Him praise, we give Him honor and we give Him our needs.

Just before Yeshuah Jesus tells us how we should pray, He first tells us how not pray.

Mat 6:5 "And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

Mat 6:6 "But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

Mat 6:7 "And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

Mat 6:8 "Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. (NKJV)

There are those who think if they pray loud and long, then God and people will be impressed. Not so. Let’s see how Yeshuah Jesus tells us to pray

Mat 6:9 "In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

Principle 1. Acknowledge that God is our Father.

Rom 8:15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father."

Rom 8:16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

Rom 8:17 and if children, then heirs; heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. (NKJV)

We cry out, “Abba, Father.” Abba means simply, daddy. So, God is more than a God, He is our Father, He is our Daddy. What is a daddy?

Principle 2. Acknowledge that Father God's Name is Hallowed.

Mat 6:9 "In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

What does hallowed mean? Hallowed means, holy, set apart. God’s name should be set apart from all other names and all other so called gods.

Act 4:12 "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."

Principle 3. Acknowledge that His kingdom will come.

Mat 6:10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

We wait and long for Yeshuah to come and set up His kingdom, a kingdom that will last for a thousand years. Then after the devil is loosed for a short time he will be thrown into the lake of fire for all eternity. Then Yeshuah Jesus kingdom will exist for all eternity.

Principle 4. Acknowledge that Gods will, will be done, not ours.

Mat 6:10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

Most often we want our will to be done not Gods. Am I right? It’s hard to do God's will, when we think we know what is best.

Jesus even prayed asking that if there be any other way than the cross to save us then let’s take it. But, not His will but the Fathers will.

Luk 22:42 saying, "Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done."

Principle 5. Acknowledge God the Father can supply our needs.

Mat 6:11 Give us this day our daily bread.

Yeshuah Jesus said just a couple of verses earlier that our Father knows our needs before we ask.

Mat 6:8 "Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.

Principle 6. Acknowledge we need to forgive, just as we need forgiveness.

Mat 6:12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.

Yeshuah Jesus said;

Mat 6:14 "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

Mat 6:15 "But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Think about that a minute. If we can’t forgive those who we feel has done us wrong, then God can’t forgive us. Wow!

The Hebrew word for “forgive” is naw-saw. It is made up of two Hebrew words. The first is, “nace”, it means; “Continue to grab hold.” The second word is the letter Aleph which means; “Father and strength”. Together we have, “Continue to grab hold of the strength of the Father”. When we forgive, we use the strength of the Father, for we can’t forgive on our own ability.

Peter came to Jesus and asked how many times we should forgive someone.

Mat 18:21 Then Peter came to Him and said, "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?"

Mat 18:22 Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.

Jesus also goes further and says;

Mat 5:44 "But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,

Mat 5:45 "that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

Mat 5:46 "For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

Then Paul says in Romans;

Rom 12:14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.

Rom 12:15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.

Rom 12:16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.

Rom 12:17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men.

Rom 12:18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.

Rom 12:19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord.

Rom 12:20 Therefore "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head."

Rom 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Principle 7. Acknowledge that Father God can deliver us from evil and save us from the devil.

Mat 6:13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. (NKJV)

This one is two-fold; to keep us away from temptation and to save us from the devil. Temptation comes from Satan.

Jas 1:13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.

Jas 1:14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.

Jas 1:15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

Jas 1:16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.

Jas 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

So, the end result to giving into temptation can lead to death.

Principle 8. Acknowledge that Father God has the kingdom, the power and the glory.

Mat 6:13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. (NKJV)

In Revelation it says;

Rev 4:10 the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying:

Rev 4:11 "You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created."

We need to give God praise. We need to acknowledge that God the Father is all-powerful, full of glory and His kingdom will come.

I believe if we use this prayer as a model, we will honor the LORD.
